The balance of your pool water chemicals is important, and the way to keep up with them is to test the swimming pool water. When your pool is properly balanced, the water is healthier for swimmers and you’ll be able to prevent algae, cloudy water, and green or brown water. The right balance can protect your equipment and pool surface from damage. Here are three common testing methods.

  • Drop test kits have been around for a long time. They’re easy to use; you just take a sample of water from the pool and add a set amount of drops of a chemical to the sample. The water sample will change color, and by comparing the color to a chart you’ll be able to determine the levels. The drawback is that you have to test for each chemical separately.
  • Test strips are the simplest method. Using these strips, you can test up to six different things at once, rather than doing a new test for each chemical. All you have to do is dunk the test strip in the water, pull it out, and wait. After about 10-15 seconds, the pads at the end of the strips will change colors, and you can compare those colors to a chart.
  • Pool shops will test your water for free. It’s quick and easy to test your pool water with an at-home kit, but those kits don’t test for everything. At a pool shop, you can have your water tested for free, and the professionals can test for things you can’t, like copper, total dissolved solids, and water hardness. Some people take their water to the shop every week.

If you’re going to test your water yourself, you should test it at least three times a week during the summer months. This will allow you to catch potential problems quickly before they cause any major issues. You’ll keep the problems at bay, while not adding too many chemicals for a comfortable pool experience. Use a fresh test, not an old one, and follow the directions precisely.
